Sufia Kamal was born on June 20, 1911 at the uncle's house in Shayestabad, Barisal. His father's name was Syed Abdul Bari and mother's name was Syeda Sabera Khatun, who was a resident of Comilla. At the time Sufia Kamal was born, Bengali Muslim women had to spend their life under house arrest. They had no chance to study at school and college. The entry of Bengali language in the family was somehow forbidden.
He has been educated in self-education among family emergencies.

In 1932, the sudden death of her husband led him to financial problems. He started teaching at the Calcutta Corporation School and till 1942 he was engaged in this profession. In 1939, Kamaluddin Ahmed was married to his second marriage.

In 1947, when
"Shaptahik Begum" was first published, Sufia Kamal became its first
editor. In October of that year after the partition of India she came to Dhaka.
